The Project
Charleston, SC is known as the holy city, and it doesn’t take very long to see why. When walking nearly any street downtown you are bound to find a church, a synagogue, or perhaps two or three. These buildings are steeped in history dating back to the early days of the city itself. And it only helps that they are beautiful. It is quite common to see these churches while walking by, but more often than not the viewing is limited to the outside of the buildings; rarely do we go to see what lies on the inside even though many of these buildings are frequently open to the public. It is further difficult to find many modern photographs documenting these churches. In my searches I came across mostly older black and white images.
In May of 2009 I set out to capture the beauty of these buildings using the advancements and advantages of modern photographic technology. I intend to pair these images with the history, stories, and life of the churches and the people who attend them. This project will make a beautiful and useful view, for current and future generations, into the churches that have helped to make the Holy City holy.
It is my intention to produce a book and potentially make prints available for purchase. At the moment the book and website are the main focuses.
You can see some of the images that have been captured here. Also, the best place to keep up to date with the most recent happenings is our Facebook page.
Using the drop down menu at the right of the page you can select a church and get the information currently available for each.
Also, below is a map of the churches that we currently hope to include in the project:
